Many people (especially children of age about 14 - 17) have doubt about, what is the difference between Customer and Consumer?
Let us see the definition first –
Customer is the one who is purchasing any goods or services for personal-use and/or for business-use (i.e. for resell).
In the other hand, Consumer is the one who is the end user of any purchased goods or services and they are unable to resell that product or services for any profit, legally.
Now, let us understand this definition with few examples –
Ex.1: Suppose, a little girl wants a pink frock. So she told their need to her daddy, and her daddy purchases a pink frock from the nearby clothe shop and gifted to her. Now, the little girl wears it and feels happy. Thus here, the little girl is a consumer because she uses that pink frock (means, consumed it), and her daddy is a customer for clothe shop from where he purchased pink frock.
Ex.2: Now, a person reaches to a cloth shop and purchases a Jeans Pant and a T-Shirt for himself. Thus here, the person became both customer and consumer, because he purchased clothes from the clothe shop, so he became customer for that clothe shop, and purchases clothes for himself (means, he will use it), so he became consumer too.
Ex.3: Let us suppose that, a person or a business owner (say his name is, Mahaveer) has the license to resell purchased goods and/or services; and also let us suppose that, there is another person or a business owner (say his name is, Raghuveer) has license to manufacture products and sell it in wholesale, e.g. clothes.
Now, Mahaveer reaches to Raghuveer's clothe factory and purchases clothes in a wholesale to sell in his own shop. Means, Raghuveer sold clothes in a wholesale to Mahaveer, and Mahaveer will resell those clothes to his customers. Thus here, Mahaveer become a customer for Raghuveer, and if people purchases clothes in retail for personal use from Mahaveer's clothe shop, then they will become the customer for Mahaveer and also become product consumers (because, they are the end users of those products). But, if someone (say his name is, Deepak) has license to resell purchased products, and suppose he purchases clothes in bulk from Mahaveer, then that person now be the customer for Mahaveer; and if he (means, Deepak) sold those clothes to their customers, so now they are the end users of those clothes. Therefore, we can say that Deepak's customers are the end users (i.e. consumers) and they cannot resell those products (i.e. clothes) legally.
Conclusion: In conclusion, we can say that –
A customer is who purchases product from seller, and consumer is who the end user of that product is.
